Poison would was my first guess, if you look at the report it says "Common Poisons" so other more exotics option were not excluded. However the speed at which the poison took them seems odd. They died in what looks like a typical herd formation. Also living things will writhe when electrocuted as stated to explain the trunk markings. Lightning could still be the culprit especially if they were in water and wet as they create a path to ground.
 
Awful, lighting theory to me makes more sense, but wild elephants can cause alot damage which might might make someone want to harm them, either way very sad.

do they destroy crops or something?


i wouldnt think a lighting strike could kill mulitple elephants at once, i mean dont people survive them
