I'm not really sure where else to put this, but I was wondering if there are any Elephant Nose fish owners out there? I am heading to a new LFS about an hour away and supposedly they have more rare and exotic fish than most LFSs. So, I saw that they might have this species in stock, and was thinking about getting one, seems how its a bit of an oddball. I might not get one or they might not have any in stock, but I would like some information just incase. So, what I am basically looking for is what they eat. I have Tubifex, will that work? Anyone that has one have any pics?

Very cool fish, I've never owned one but would like to one day. From what I understand, frozen food is the way to go with these guys. Over time you may be able to get them on a pellet but I'd start out with some Mysis, Tubifex, Brine, or Blood Worms.

Tubifex is the one thing I have right now that I thought they would eat. I'll get some other foods though just in case. (If I get one or if they have one)

You keep 'em just like South American knives actually...

mormyrids (the family elephant noses belong in) are a passion of mine. from my experience elephant noses do well singly, but greatly prefer to be in groups of 6+.

as far as food you will have a hard time getting them to eat anything but live black worms (tubiflex).

also, you will have to house these fish separate from your knives due to their usage of electric fields for navigation and feeding.

just basic info. if you need anything more just pm with specific questions, there is a wealth to be said about these fish. too much for one post :)

Not necessarily. While these are all electric fish, Knives can change their frequency to avoid any confusion.

I guess $21 would be a fair price for one. The healthy and chunky ones over here are £16.95

The last one I had didnt do well atall and it didnt eat the bloodworms I gave it..Not a good fish for a busy community IMO..

Elephant noses are great fish.

Mine only ate frozen bloodworms and tubifex worms. It died a couple weeks ago for unknown reasons. I'll definitely get another one if I can find one.

Make sure it's eating at the LFS, they can come in stressed and stop eating, then just sorta waste away over time.

I paid $20 for mine.

good luck with the one you get..post up pics when you get him
