This is one of the first fish I ever had and I absolutely adored it. It looked so cool and was such a mysterious little guy (well, not really little since they can grow up to 9 inches :p ).

Anyone here ever housed one?

i have.... oddly enough the elephant nose are the one mormyrid I have had difficulty with. I dunno why. I have kept and do keep many other mormyrids successfully, including some that should be more difficult. Yet I can never keep an elephantnose long term.

But, actually they are cool fish!! I think there are many others here with more experience!

there has been an article in AFM in the past 12 months about elephantnoses. Sorry I have no more to offer.

I'm getting myself a little group of these guys. One of the first fish to ever grab my attention :D

I have bought three and none survived more then three weeks. Two died out of the blue and believe it or not the third one disappeared. I have heard they get really lonely if kept isolated and if they are kept in a community tank without any other elephantnoses they attempt jumping out of the tank. So I’ve heard.

IMO, keeping them in a group might be a mistake. I could be wrong, but I have owned one now for quite a while and he is VERY aggressive. He was purchased with 2 other elephant nose fish, and killed them both. A larger group in a larger tank might work better, but I would assume that eventually the dominate one would stress and slowly knock off the weaker of the bunch.. and just like that, 1 by 1, the weakest of the bunch will be removed.

Would be cool to see someone try it! A LFS near me who purchases fish through an LAX transhipper brought in about 30 of them. They stuffed them in a 29g tank, and in one night, all but 1 perished.. Might just be coincidence, but the one that was left was the same 'large dominant' one I had seen the day before.. This LFS crashes tanks like this all the time though, so it might not be anything..

Hey, Ive got 4 of them at the moment in a community tank and there gettin huge....they are excellent to watch as they are the most interactive fish ive ever seen, they love hide and seek! They do eat dried food, but mostly when the lights go out, so ya gotta make sure there gettin enough food, they love a bit of bloodworm though!!!
