Has anyone used Elm for there tanks, i caught a tree down in my yard and got some cool peices, just didnt know if it was good wood you use.

I've never heard of any warnings attached to elm...

Eating it's leaves/branches/roots is not toxic to livestock nor dogs...

Elm is a hard wood, which is generally a good quality...

You will want to de-sap freshly cut wood as well as dry it out thoroughly. Once that is done you will also want to salt treat it.

To do this I would give it a warm soak with many water changes for several days to a week... let it sun bathe to dry it out. If possible set it near a fire (but don't let it catch fire)... For a salt bath place it in a warm strong salt solution (at least the same as ocean water, slightly more is fine), boiling is not necessary.

It is commonly suggested to boil "driftwood" before using it, but boiling is not necessary. If you suspect it contains bacteria, fungus, parasites, etc you wish to destroy, then yes, boiling is best. But the boiling process is pretty rough on the wood and can contribute to it's disintegration.
