Hi, i'm thinking about getting an elongatus piranha about 4-5'' from a store about 45 minutes away. What are your experiences with these guys?

some ppl had very active elong, some had elong that would stay in hiding, really no way to know for sure. how the fish behave in the store can be very different than in your tank. like kevin said that often they will be skittish when first added to the tank but once they settle down they will come out of the shell, just matter of time.
they are ambush predators so if they hide a lot, it's normal, adding powerhead would help.

There might be a real good reason these guys are seen more in pet stores not user pics in home aquaria. Rarely are larger ones ever seen, period.
If you've got other tanks w/ P's in it might be a good novelty but nowhere near the entertainment and interest value of Pygo shoals.

Mine was super aggressive at the Pet Store - had nowhere to swim and nowhere to hide, got stuck in the net + bite the employee who tried to dislodge his head with his bare hands - the excitment ended there. For the course of the next year - overly skittish, hide often, ate like a horse, grew a few inches, sold it.
