Have you tried putting some snails or shrimps in the tank? They are good algae eaters you know, but the only porblem that you will have are your fishes.

Just give the tank a black out for a 7-10 days. Since you don't have plants, there is no need to run the light too much. How many hours does you tank get of light each day? For the future, it is not a good first defense to start adding chemicals when something goes awry.

snails and etc will only eat what's growing on the glass or substrate/rocks. A filter feeder is what would help, but this is not practical. As stated above, I would "blackout" the tank, or reduce lighting.

I agree with the UV.

You should also consider "Hooked on Monkey Phonics". It is better than the Hooked on Phonics that you grew up with. It comes with a Spelling Monkey.

I think you've probably got a nitrate problem also. Is this the same 55 that's in your sig
-55- sand
2 albino channel catfish 4" and 9", 1 blue channel catfish 6", 2 JD's 3" and 4", 1 tiger oscar 2", 1 pike 3", 1 farlowalla 2", 1 pleco 4"
If so you've got more than lighting problems, IMHO.
