I was picking up some little SDs and plants at one of the LFS I frequent, when I saw these guys. They are 8-10''. I immediatley thought c.venezuela (cause we only get sveni,Bcrawler,johanna,xingu1,venz on a regular basis). But then I looked a little closer and saw what looked like freckles on the faces of a few, and whenever I see those its usually LENTICs. Are these lentics? Please say no cause I wont have tank space for one for at least a week. Thanks for the help.

Definitely not lents. Definitely not johanna. Definitely not "Venezuela".

See the ocellated tail marking? The complete gold ring would seem to indicate strigata. Although the fish do not have a humeral spot. At that size they should have one. It may yet develop.

I say get them and see what they turn into. Sometimes this is the best way to end up with some very cool pikes.

*EDIT* After looking a bit more, I noticed the distinct sub orbital stripe. Possibly "Xingu II"?

Are they worth it at $55.00 a pop? A few months ago I would have bought 2 no problem, now I want to know what Im gonna end up with at adulthood. Thanks scat. Def lugubris of some sort. Anyone else?

$55 for Xingu II's is not a bad deal and that's definitely the direction i'm leaning.

PP has kept Xingu II's before so he can positively ID them if this is the case.

Agreed, not lents. Not sure what juve Xingu II's look like. They do look alot like Strigatas, with the caudal markings and stripe all the way down the side. But can't really see any red on top of Dorsal.
They look very faded especially for that size.
You would think that at least the dominant one would have more color.

I asked the guy who did the order and all he could tell me in his broken english was "this called rainbow pike, get pink stomache soon, this one bery goot fish". Ill hold off till we are 100% positive of ID. Id hate to pay that much for a venezuela.

I was looking at the pics on mostly cichlids and now im thinking that maybe they are venz transitioning from juvinile to adult coloration. I think this cause they are at 8-10'', witch is young adult size. I aint paying $55 for a venezuela. Anyone else?

Heres your reference. Pretty sure they aren't sp. 'xingu II'. Mine were more slender from the start, and never really got that beefy, more like acuts. than anything. Not quite THAT slender, but relatively same ball part. Also, they had a humeral blotch behind their pectoral fin, kinda like what strigata, marmorata, and lenticulata have...;). So the chance is they are either a variant of sp.'venezuela', sp. 'lugubris', or another type of pike...haha. Might as well get them and see what happens...;). BTW...at the same size that those are mine had oranges, reds and greens...so pretty sure they aren't sp. 'xingu II'. If you DO find some..get them as they are awesome fish!

This was taken before I moved to Mississippi, the fish on the right is a subadult sp. 'xingu II' male...;). Just to give you an idea as to what they should look like. He was 9" in the video. ;)
