Found a small turtle my dogs were chewing on and quickly brought him inside. He’s pretty beat up and he’s trying to walk but he’s having a hard time moving his back right leg. I’m gonna set up a small tote tank with sand and a shallow water dish for now until he can recover a bit then let him out in the field across the road from my house. Any tips to help this guy. What kind of turtle is this image.jpgimage.jpg

That is probably a Eastern Box Turtle. The Eastern Box Turtle is more terrestrial than a aquatic turtle like the Red Eared slider. Tbh I would take it to a Nature Center because they will know how to treat it.

Not sure where any nature centers are around here. I think the closest is like an hour and a half and I don’t drive yet

I grew up calling them box turtles but not sure how accurate that is lol. View attachment 1496323
I know sand probably isn’t the best for him but with how busted the bottom of the shell is I don’t want him to walk over gravel and get more bits chipped off from it. I think he may have a broken leg too because when he tries to walk he seems to just do 360’s and doesn’t use his back right leg

Is the turtle even alive anymore? Looks like his shell's cracked in a few places and infested with maggots; I'd probably soak the turtle in lukewarm water first for a couple minutes, then place it in a diluted chlorhexidine bath for maybe 10 or so minutes; hopefully that might clear the maggots from the wound and disinfect it a bit. I'm not too sure about this, but soaking the turtle in water with aquarium salt added could possibly also help. I know it'll probably remove a large portion of the maggots, though. I don't have much experience with terrestrial turtles, but if you can somehow clean the wound and remove the maggots, Betadine, Polysporin (without the painkiller additive), and some sort of iodine-based topical cream might be beneficial. Canine saliva might prove to be greatly detrimental to the turtle; possibly lethal (although I highly doubt it). Honestly, I think it would be best just to turn the poor turtle over to an animal rescue of some sort if there's any in your area. 90% sure the turtle is an Eastern Box Turtle.

I'm also wondering if a vehicle hit it.

OMFG, he does have maggots, bad too. I’m gonna soak him right now with lukewarm water with aquarium salt for a couple minutes
