I need help. Ever since I did a water change on sunday I have lost two of my mbuna and my catfish! I don't know what I did. It was just a normal water change until I saw the fish becoming sluggish they wouldn't eat and thier colors were fading. I thaught maybe it was because I raised the ph or added salt but I've done this before. Now my synodontis decorus, my socolofi and my biggest red zebra re gone. My other fish seem to be doing fine but that's what I thaught yesterday woke two fish dead. I checked my parameters amonia and nitrite are at zero and nitrate is low. The fish that looks the sickest right now has light white patches all over his body and looks very skinny and weak. It even got sucked by the filter. I thaught it was dead but it swam off. Any ideas of whats going on?!?!?!

anybody? i've lost 3 more fish!

Did you treat the water with water conditoner such as "Prime" or "Stresscoat"? If not it could be the chlorine or chloramides. Also, test the PH of the water coming out of the tap.

I did treat the water with stress coat. The water out of the tap is 7.4 my tank ph is 8.2 I buffer the water. The thing is even before the water was buffered the tap was never the problem. Recently I did a big water change and the fish are coming to starting to swim out and show aggression. It's still too early to count myself out. Is it possible the contaminents in the water changed?

if i had water of 7.4 I probably wouldnt add anything besides prime, flucuating ph stresses the fish too much and they die. I also hate stress coat it has aloe in it and fouls the water IMO.

Does this particular product bind both the chlorine and chloramine? Call your water company to test the water for you for heavy metals added, etc.

What is your usual tank maintenance? Why the bigger water change suddenly?

It's not just the pH that is the issue and by that difference, it should not kill those fish almost instantly IMO. I'd test for the KH (carbonate hardness) and GH (general hardness). Compare the results between the tapwater and tank water.

The stress coat should not be the issue unless it doesn't bind chlorine and chloramine already. There are far worse pungent smell that fish tolerated than the aloe vera.

The big water change was to help the fish I usually don't do 75% water changes lol. Thanks but I now know the cause of the problem, while I was testing my water the other day my brother spilled some of the solution into the water . None the less I was angry he told me after all this happened. Anyway my remaining 6 fish seem to be recovering. so I will waith until tommorow to see what happens. Thank you all for your help!
