ok I have my 150 stocked with 8" Trimac, 6" Red devil, 3" Pink Convict

Ammo 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 10 ph 7.0 temp 78-79

A few days back I noticed some black marks on the red devils two little belley fins. It was on the tips of the fins. Looks kinda like the tips were dipped into dirty car oil. No fuzz or any cuts, just look like they have changed colour to black. Then I have noticed the next day there were some on his tail fin and the tip of his top fin. Again this morning i have noticed that they are in a few other spots, like one little mark on his forehead now. There is some aggression in my tank, like the trimac is the boss and chases the other two around but it's not that serious like no one has any injuries and there has not been any jaw locking. Just the occasional chasing. Fish are being fed Omega 1 pellets, hikari pellets, and occasionally some frozen krill. The fish seems to be fine, like he eats and swims normally. WC are once a week about 25% although my tanks are always in prime condition and water problems have never been an issue with me. I keep many cichlids including a 135 gallon discus tank and I have never had anything but ick with my fish, so I have no idea what this could be. I usually have a digital camera but its MIA right now and I can't get a pic. Anyone have any idea of what this could be???

he may just be coloring up. Can you visually see it coming off of his body or does it look to be a part of him (under hi skin)? I'm no expert but I have never heard of a disease causing fish to turn black. Red devils are capable of having red, orange, white, black colorations. Also saw a yellow one but I'm thinking not very common. Just an idea. Grab a pic if you can find your camera

Yeah i have seen something like that as well on my devils what i have expeirenced is that those black spots is a color morph. The spots stay a couple of weeks and when they fade their is a different color their like red becomes white and or some times it stays black like its just a freckle or somthing. But i have not noticed anything bad about this happening healthwise and its mostly temperary and i have seen it happen on devils that are between 4" and 8" i think its just going through a juvinile change. lol

Makes sense sinse all red devils aren't red in the wild or aquaria .. IN fact you can probably reference yours on Rapps site.. His home page has a few .. THey look blotched not spotted though ... www.tangledupincichlids.com

Black markings are normal as a RD grows up. Most likely they will go away, but maybe they won't. Nothing to worry about.
