my ten gallon fry grow out tank sprung a leak, luckily the local big box had the 1$ a gallon deal going on so I went and got a brand new 10 ga, I never liked the substrate in that tank so I'm putting caribsea black volcano sand in it, and putting the rest of the tank (air pump, filter, heater, decor) in the new one.

question is will I get a mini bacterial cycle because I'm not using the substrate? I just did a WC yesterday so I'm literally just going to transfer all the water from that tank into this one. basically will be the same tank w/o the BB colonies in the substrate and the sides of the tank. there should be BB on/in filter, on the heater, and other decor.

Assuming that you were not using an old style UG filter, and that you kept the filter wet in dechlorinated water or in some of the original tank water and then moved the filter to the new tank filled with dechlorinated water you will be fine. While the substrate does have some of the BB, most will be in the filter.

(If somehow the old filter dried out or was place in chlorinated water, then you probably lost a lot or all of the BB, and in that case, you may indeed have a mini cycle.)

if you are using the same filter and the media is still wet then you should be fine if you threw your media away or something (the water should be fine, but just incase) take some of the media from one of your bigger tanks and just throw it in there.

oh yeah using same everything, the tetra filter I use has a bio scrubber so even if I replace the carbon filter there still is a ton of BB on that thing. I caught the leak very early luckily so the filter was still running and everything stayed wet
