I've had this filter on my 55gallon for over a year now with out any issues at all. been an awesome filter... til now. So annoying in fact I've unplugged it and the AC filter is running solo currently. I did a normal water change today and then after plugging the emp 400 back in and powering up, it continued to do a buzzing/grinding type sound. Actually it's more of a vibration sound, ya know? If I pull the intake up a bit off of the impeller it dies down, but as soon as I put it back to it's proper place it gets going again making that god awful sound. It's not really loud at all honestly. It's a real faint vibrating/buzzing/grinding sound that is just audible enough for you not to ignore and drive you freaking nuts at the same time.

Has anyone encountered this before? I looked at the impeller and housing and everything looks fine. My magnum 350 went out on that tank about a month ago and now this.. both were about a year old. I guess you get what you pay for but come on man, cut a guy some slack :(

Ok wth. So I left it unplugged for 20 mins and just plugged it back in for craps n giggles. Plug it back in and it's back to sounding fine again! Course about 1 minute of making sure it was ok, it started doing the noise again, like it was trying to work itself up to getting stuck or grinding on whatever it did before but it worked through it and is running fine again. This stuff is donkey :(

do you have sand, gravel, or bare bottom?

mine did this when I had sand as the substrate... no matter how much I cleaned it the sound wouldn't go away. finally got rid of the sand and about a week later it stopped

yes I have a sand substrate, T-grade 3mCQ. I use mesh over the intakes though so granules getting in to the intake/filter itself is not a possibility.

I had the same problem and I took it apart and there was a piece of carbon stuck in the impeller. You may want to try and see if there is something stuck in there.
