EMP 400 Media options?

I just set up a new EMP 400 on my 55g last night and had a few questions regarding media. Do you have to use the blue cartridges w/ carbon that came with it? What I did is I cut an opening on the blue thread and took out all the carbon and placed it in the media cartridge containers that came with it. I then placed the blue cartridges back in, but they no longer contain the carbon inside.

I've heard that people have done things such as used pot scrubbers to fill their emp 400s. What else can you do with an EMP 400 and can you please use photos if possible. I dont want to spend the money every month for new EMP 400 cartridges...

Don't replace them till they look worn. Just rinse them every week. Mine go 6 to 8 months before they start to tear. even then I suppose you could just adhear new blue floss if you wanted to. I have even experimented with folding a piece of polyester 1/2" batting I get from the fabric dept at walmart over the whole cartridge. then just throw it away and wrap on a new one every week. This works well. and is like $3 for a 5'x5' piece. Great filter by the way, good choice. You will like it.
