In a Smuckers jar.
Hello, I have a Emp 400 and it makes a vibrating noise and the gray thing that you pull up and push down seems to vibrate alot. This noise comes when i do a water change and when the tank water gets lower the filter makes a bubbling noise and the water in the Emp goes down. When i fill the tank back up and start the filter up again, it starts up normal but then it starts making a loud vibrating noise which it didnt have before. I would have to remove all the water from inside the Emp and start it up again, putting a cup of water in as the Emp starts and it would start up more quiet. Do any of you guys have the same problem? can i just let it run noisily? Is there another way to stop the vibrating sound with out having to do what i did?

Take out the impellor housing, remove impellor, clean impellor and housing, and try again.

If you lift up on the grey lever the housing will lift up and u can pull it out, there's a hatch at the bottom where you'll see the impellor sticking out that opens to remove the impellor. If you clean it and it still makes noise, you might have to buy a new impellor for it.

Oh, and don't forget to take the whole filter off the back of your tank, and clean it out too. It's a good time to do it when you have to clean the inner workings. :) Also, take that nifty little brush that came with it and clean out your spray bars, that can help too. :D Don't forget to float your bio-wheels in your aquarium while you're cleaning so you don't lose any beneficial bacteria.

If you leave it running while you do a partial water change, then when the filter takes on air it causes the motor to warm up and the impeller is constantly grinding in the chamber, which can't be too good for it. This system is cooled by aquarium water flowing through the system, constantly keeping it cool. It will lose power as heating like that and running without water running through the system will wear it out quicker than usual. My Emperor 280 is dead silent. You have to make sure that everything is seated properly so that there is no vibration. I really feel that the root of your problem is not turning it off before you drop the water level. Marineland filters don't do well for low water levels.

I have one emp 400 that is stone cold silent the other is noisy.... they are both clean and have always been that way..... the only way i get it to stop is to pick up a little on the impeller housing and let it set on its own....
