I just got one of these and I wanted to use it as a high efficiency biological filtration replacement for my d.i.y. fluidized bed. What I wanted to know is if it was a good idea to remove the slide in cartridges and replace them with ceramic rings? Would this be adequate for the use intended or is there a better option?

sure you can do that, I used to have my emporer 400 full of bags of seachem matrix. some goesas far as to put air stones in the bottom of the filter to boost bio,not sure if that does anything though.

Thanks for the reply, I guess my only concern would be if the flow within the filter is sufficient for providing the rings with enough oxygen exchange.

A HOB filter is going to have higher dissolved O2 in it than say a sealed canister I would think

That's true. I guess I'll try it out, the entire reason I got the 280 was for bio filtration. I already have my 2213 pulling out most of the waste, and aside from carbon not really using any chemical filtration.

It will def work you may want to put a sponge over the intake to keep the bio media clean(ish)

Is it necessary? I figured that I would just rinse gently with aquarium water once a month, but if I have to, I guess I don't mind.
