I hate the standard rite-size cartridge that the emperor 400 uses. The filter pad on it falls apart when you try to wash it, and it comes with carbon, which is unnecessary.
Are there any third party ones? I'd like to use something with open-cell foam and then a polyester fiber pad.

Many people have suggested using the Supercartridge.

I've never used them myself. A member, who no longer posts used to swear by them. I only have the Emp 280 that I use for a backup tank. I have cut a piece of bonded padding and just fold the edges around an old cartridge frame.

i use the supercartridges and love em. i just buy foam pads at walmart and cut to fit the super cartridges. been using the same foam pad for over a year now.

Im glad you asked this, I tried to ask the same thing but it somhow turned into a AC110 vs. Emp 400 debat >< I think I am going to give the super cartreges a try, for the meantime however I put a pair of 4" airstones on each side tank of the filter and then stacked layers of bonded filter pads to the top, 4 days so far and it seems to be working great.

If you can find them, they work quite well. The 6X9 size lend themselves to many media replacements.

Ive also took the stock cartridge, cut away the media, rinsed out the carbon. Then take a second one, rubber band them together with filter floss clamshelled between the two.Had to trim the ribs down a little to get them to sit right but it worked well.
