I have one of these on my 65 gal, and was wondering who else had them. what you put in the extra cartridges (i just put Black Carbon in mine). Where is the best place to buy the filter replacements?
I used to have one. I used it on a 20g Water was sparkling clean. I had ammonia chips in the extra cartridge. I usually just buy the replacements from Petco
Been using one on my 55g for about 10 yrs now. Only use carbon when i need to remove meds. Otherwise i use a cut-to-fit AC 110/500 sponge and Pot scrubbies on one side. The other i just use the grey media basket thing filled with Ehfi Substrat Pro on both sides with some filter floss between the two sides and more pot scrubbies.
That will get old quick, it's not needed unless your wanting to constantly remove a chemical. Do like the guy above says and put more bio-material in there to increase biological filtration .
I have 6 of them on various tanks. The filter cartridges should last you a year or so. Just wash them out. I use the shower head on jet stream and it makes them like new. But they best place i have found to buy replacements in quantity is ebay you can get 24 for about 30bucks. You can also buy bulk rolls of filter material and cut it to fit. When ever i have any cloudy water i take the gray baskets apart and put one side in slot A and a 1.5'' piece of filter material in and then the other side in slot b. It works great for polishing the water. I usually put the filter in the first slot and put about 6 pot scrubbies in front of that for more bio. Oh and you only need that carbon to remove meds or a certain chem. like the others have said. see as how your turn over rate is a little low 65/400=6 times and hour. I would run one side with the 1.5'' filter material and the other with one filter and the scrubbies. And if you were to add another emp400 that would make your turnover rate ideal at 12 times per hour. It is said that you need a turn over of 10 for HOB filters.
I run a penguin 350 and an emperor 400 on my 75.. I love it, I currently use carbon on the extra slots, but I may change it to bio filtration... Any ideas on how to put scrubbies in there?
