hi all......bear with me cuz i'm new to the chiclid thing......i wanted to get what the LFS called a emperor chiclid....any ideas on how big it gets, how nasty....or if such a fish even exists?

Emperor cichlids are from Africa.

They get very large. Some say 90cm.

They are very beautiful fish. I actually just picked up 2 myself.

Yeah they are a very cool fish, but can only really be enjoyed in a big tank, since they grow very large and they get large fast.

They may mess with each other being cichlid nature so it is ussually a good idea to have either 1 or 3 or more cause if you have 2 you may just end up with one.

They are pretty good with other fish though. I have seen them with aros, pbass, giant gourmis, dats and stuff like that.

I haven't heard of anyone successfully keeping emperor cichlids (Boulengerochromis microlepis) to breeding size (18") in anything under 900 gallons. Males are highly territorial and, most likely, only one male will be left in a group. Mine killed all the other males at around 14". Dominant males have also been known to kill all tankmates including harem females for no particular reason. A monster tank is definitely needed for these cichlids since they can reach 3 feet.

Damn...I hope they play nice in my 600

Very attractive and interesting fish but somewhat hard to keep. My male beat on my female quite a bit. They also terrorized smaller tankmates eating several so I parted with them rather quickly.
