What could I stock it with??

I would like a couple of catfish that get meduim size and can live in there for life...

Maybe just 1 if thats all I could have

corys, i have corydoras sterbai in my 15 gallon planted tank, their soo cute when they dig in the substrate. very easy to take care of, they eat anything but stil make good community fish, u could keep a dozen or so in a 20 long depending on the species.

heres a couple of mine,

also, the tank will be ONLY sand, no hiding places unless needed...

about how big do they get??

corydoras sterbai get about 2.5'' max! mostly likely around 2'' their tons and tons of species of corys most of them stay under 4'' so they would make good fish for a 20 gal. their also very active and have great personalities IMO.

and what about a spotted syno? or raphael?

i don't think so...someone with a bit more experience may know better, but i would not keep those in a 20 gal for life.

u should make the tank suitable to whatever is living in it... choose the fish then design the tank to its preferable environment.

well, looks like I am going to get some cory cats...

What do they need??

Plants? Hiding spots? etc...

I am looking to spend somewhere around $20 today on the fish so... yeah

they like plants and drift wood. sand would make the best substrate but it needs to be rather smooth.. if its not, they may be ok.. gravel works too, small round pebbles would work great!

cheapest corys i have seen around here are pandas they get about 1.5 '' max and are about $3 each. but then again that's here not Texas.. i suggest u find other places to buy fish other then petsmart...

if ur serous about catfish i suggest u bookmark this link and search through the corydoras encyclopedia on their.. that will teach u everything u need to know about keeping corys.

this is the cory encyclopedia:

there is a LFS but they are in the process of moving (will be done by middle of this month)

I always buy my fish from them... petsmart doesnt have EBJDs =)
