Empty iPhone 4 box sells for $770 on eBay

iPhone 4 is in such high demand that recently purchased units new in the box are selling briskly on eBay – apparently even if the box is empty. As part of what he called a social experiment, Adam Jackson bought a new iPhone 4 for himself and then put the empty retail box up for sale on eBay, and despite being up front about the fact that there was no iPhone included, the empty box still sold for $770. eBay subsequently voided the auction, but it goes to show that people often don’t pay close attention to the details of what it is that they’re buying. Jackson has documented the “social experiment” on his tumblr page. The iPhone 4 empty box sale is somewhat similar to a scenario a decade ago in which someone attempted to sell a digital photo of a then-new clamshell iBook online.
