I am looking to get a ball python and I would like to get some opinions on the best type of enclosure for them. Of course you have the standard glass aquarium, but I wanted something a little more functional (like access in the front of the tank rather than the top). However, all of the functional enclosures are less aesthetic and very expensive. I guess what I am trying to say is that I would like the best of both worlds (functionality, looks, and price) and I am not sure if that exists.

Any help is much appreciated.

I have thought about building my own, but my carpentry skills leave something to be desired. If I can't find something retail, that's probably the route i'll go.

Any old vivarium will do. Wooden box with the front replaced with glass on sliders. Drill a couple of air vents and you are done. This is the ultimate simplified version lol.

I'm actually about to do a similar thing for my beardie I've decided. I've got this really sturdy wooden box that our houses previous owners to use as sort of a den for their dog. I'm going to seal the wood really well to make it waterproof and easy to clean, replace the from with a couple glass or acrylic sliding doors, and cut out the top and add a screen for a vent as well as lighting. A similar setup would work great for a ball python. See if you can find some sort of large wooden cabinet somewhere for cheap and modify it to meet a BP's needs. That would be an easy way to work around most of the carpentry part. Also, Vision cages are sweet, and really not that super expensive. Sometime in the fairly distant future when I have a house with an awesome fish/herp room, I hope I'll have a whole wall of them

shipping crates will work as well. i have one thats being used as the stand for my iguana cage that i am going to be converting into an enclosure in a month or so

Good idea...

Have you looked at the Boaphile cages? They seem pricey, but when you figure out the cost of an equally-sized glass tank, screen top, heating equipment, etc... (plus Boaphile includes shipping striaght to your door), its really not that much more.

I'm planning to get a few for my dumerils soon.
