I was watching the news the other day, when someone breeding endangered victorian cichlids was mentioned. I was wondering if there are any endangered vics that could be acquired by me to breed?
Lots of them can be purchased, not always from lfs but certainly breeders have them. I have one endangered vic myself and another to come tomorrow (yay!!!) . I breed my astatotilapia lasifasciata and will be breeding the Astatotilapia Sp. Ruby Green I am getting tomorrow as well.
A good one to breed would be Xystichromis phytophagus(Christmas Fulu). They are beautiful as adults. Very rare and endangered in the wild. You can find some small ones on ebay right now. They usually command a pretty high price though and people seem to fight for them. They are a good one. If you want more of a challenge try Astatotilapia nubila. Extremely aggressive victorian and you shouldn't keep a male with a female until she is full of eggs and ready to spawn otherwise he might kill her.
I have quite a few astatotilapia nubila right now. I am working towards getting them to breeding size. Beautiful fish I might add. Probably my favorite vic so far.
i have one of the zebras but not sure what one, say one albino victorian hap at the lfs i might swoop up and am REALLY looking for a thick skin hap and think i found one but it says assorted victorian so its not a for sure thing. who knows but its worth a try hah
Hey alistriwen there are a couple auctions on ebay for the Fulu. Captain_cichlid is a reputable seller but more pricey. The go in groups of 3. I haven't really looked for them anywhere else.
All vics are currently endangered and some are easily attainable but some are very hard to attain. I am getting my haplochromis ruby greens too, this Thursday and they are very beautiful cichlids to keep. I recommend the ruby greens for anyone. I will also post up pics when they arrive and keep everyone updated.
