I've had my 3 12" endlis from Toyin now for about 2 months. They've been doing great... eating well, getting bigger, moving around. Two of them would usually come to the surface to look for the dry krill I give to my Arowana. One of them would never go to the surface except to gulp air. This one would usually gobble up most of the Hikari sinking carnivore pellets. The last two days, the same endli that never goes to the surface has not eaten a bite (that I've seen). Well I read enough of the stickies on eating that I'm not woried about that. What concerns me is that this endli suddenly is spending time floating at the surface of the tank. I floated some dry krill right by it and it showed no intrest. Sorry about the long winded intro, but I guess my question is, is this floating behavior something to to worry about or just a change of pace for the fish? By the way the other two endlis are acting perfectly normal. Water conditions based on my test kit indicate Ph 7.5 Amonia "good" Nitrates "low". I'm doing weekly 15% water chages (siphoning the gravel bi-weekly). The tank is 225 gal and none of the fish show any signs of fighting or illness.

I would watch for labored breathing or signs of redness on the flanks! I would also step up your water changes to either more often or a higher %! I change 40-50% of the water in my tanks weekly. Bichirs produce a lot of waste. Never had an arowana but suspect they do too! Good luck, keep us posted. Johnathan

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked on the poly this morning... still floating at the surface and no other signs... regular breathing, fins looking good, no appearent damage. I'll do a water change tonight and see what happens next. Thanks again.

Hmm... this one has me thinking. If it's on a hunger strike, floating could be a means of spending the least amount of energy to gulp air.

Just give it time, it's will likely pick up eating in a week or so, but keep us updated please.

The redness on the flanks statement was meant to alert you to the possibility of a bacterial infection! If you haven't already, I would go back and re-read Anne's bit on illness and medications in the above stickies! Hopefully it's just a temporary lapse in his more normal activities! Keep up the water changes, GOOD LUCK! Johnathan

I actually did read that article last night looking for info, but fortunately the poly looks great, its just acting strangely. I'm wondering if it may have swallowed some gravel. The pellets I feed them sink and I see them getting gravel in their mouth all the time when they suck in the food, but I always see them spitting the gravel back out. That would certainly explain the lack of appetite. But if thats the case are there symptoms to look for besides not eating and further what can be done if that is the case?
