Endli growing external gills again?

Shes growing her external gills back for some reason. Is this common? They were barely visible when i first got her and have clearly grown back. Does it have anything to do with water quality?

Its genetics, and oxygen content.

Ive seen some members post pics of 10"+ bichirs retaining a bit of external gill.

Would it be more, or less oxygen that would cause the gills to regrow? I never see him swim to the top to take a breath.

Less oxygen. External gills help them pull more oxygen in.

Weird, there's quite a bit of surface agitation in the tank.
