Ive had this guy since he was about 2 inches long...now he is pushing 7inch and his gills are dissapearing more and more, one is just a nub now and the other is about half the length is used to be...Is this expected at his size?
Yes, it normal for bichirs to loose their external gills/ They have them when young to help them breath longer underwater. They have them because in the wild as fry when they swim up to breath it makes them targets for predators to eat. they loose them as they grow.
I was gonna post about this separately, but since this post is here already my question seems relevant.
Is it normal for the external gills on an ornate to be sort of rusty-red in color? It's the only part of his body near that color and I didn't notice the gill color at first, so I'm not sure if he came that way or developed it.
