Endli substrate

My 25 cm (10") Endli's are washed out, little to no makings on them. Their in a tank with white sand.
Question:
Do I save money and effort and just add back sand to the white or do a complete change to black?

Anyone have any experience with this issue? I'm assuming its the substrate is the problem?

I would just mix the black in with the white.

Thanks but sand blasting silica sand has been recently baned in Canada (blasteres are breathing it in).
I'll have to go with aquarium grade.
