Good morning,

My crew of 6 is doing really well, all are around a foot long now. There's the 3 Endlis, 2 Delhizis, and 1 Pike. I just moved them to a 90 gallon, which (due to a gift from a friend) has a deep bed of Fluval Stratum. So naturally, I am feeling the itch to add some plants. The Java Fern and lacy fern thing that was in their old tank is in their new and growing well, so they don't seem to be bothering plants. But I never see these guys in with green stuff.

My question is two-fold.
Has anyone ever kept Bichirs in a tank with plants?
And would a carpeting plant, like dwarf hairgrass be a good idea ?

I'm thinking about adding some lillies, maybe a bananna root plant, and of course the two Ferns. But other than (maybe) a carpeting plant, that's it.

Cheers!

Sometimes Polypterus will burrow in the substrate so a carpet plant may not work with the Bichirs. I personally tried Java Moss but the Senegal Polys would tear pieces off so I took the Java Moss out.

The banana plant will get uprooted. Have mine with java fern and doing good. They are tied to driftwood. Don’t keep any lower jaws. Polys like to mess with the substrate often enough. You can try plants with a dense root.

You could try planting some bigger plants such as amazon sword in a pot. I use glass cubes, dirt them and cap with PFS and gravel. I've had the same pots with same swords for at least 5 years or more. Super low maintenance.

I think the lotus will get ripped. Same with aponogenton. You could do crinum calamistratum or natans though....

For carpet, if you get some dwarf sag or staurogyne repens with good roots, that is your best bet.

Also look at bolbitis (african water fern). It is a rhizome plant but grows large lacey leaves to provide cover.

Thank you guys for the suggestions!

And it didn't take long for them to start re-arranging things in the tank, so yea. XD

That one almost gave me a heart attack.

I think I'll try an Amazon Sword or something like it in a pot....

Cheers!

That's a wonderful bury picture! You are going to have a wonderful time replanting the plants if they dig them up, but honestly it is totally worth it. Keep us posted :)

mine lived with these plants... uprooting from time to time...
