So, I have another thread about some problems I've been having with the sump on my 300 gallon. I'm thinking about ditching the sump and running an XP3 (it's already running on it in conjunction with the sump) and an Eheim 2262. Would that be enough filtration for a 300 gallon stocked with (ultimately full-grown) 5 peacock bass, 2 pike cichlids and 2 motaguenses plus 6 black bar SD's? I'm at the point where, even though I know I can probably fix the sump, I don't want to deal with it anymore and just want to go with canisters.

^ lol PM HarleyK I know he runs one just can't remember the size tank, I am interested too since I have the same size tank but don't have it running yet. Sorry I can't speak from experience Paul :(

Howdy,

I am running two Eheim 2262 on my 220 gal. I had one at first and added a second 2262 as my piranhas reached 8''. Not that I had any problems with lack of biofiltration, but I simply wanted to be prepared for things to come. Like you with your peacocks, I am planning on housing fully grown Pygocentrus piraya. Always be prepared.

The flow was a bit too strong in my tank, causing brown bearded algae to grow near the outlets. That might not be a problem in a bigger tank like your 300 gal. Widening the holes in the spray bar and, thus, reducing outlet speed, took care of it for me. No more algae.

The XP3 is about half an Eheim 2262. I wouldn't go with adding just one 2262 to your system. Either add another XP3 + 2262, or add two 2262 and remove the XP3 (or leave it on, depending on how much tubing clutter you can tolerate in your tank).

Best of luck,
HarleyK

Fix the sump or just take the socks off it. It cant be that much of a problem.

cool, thanks for the info. I'll just run the 2262 and XP3 for now until I need to increase my filtration and either add another XP3 later or get another 2262 (if they still make them by then). I have some extra filters I can use on the 75 that has the XP3 so I can always take that out and put it in the 300. I may eventually make another sump for it instead, too.

Good idea on widening the holes in the spraybar. It's just about too much in my mom's 125 running a 2260. Although, the pump I had in my sump should be putting out about the same flow as the 2262 and I haven't had any problems with algae.

Fix the sump or just take the socks off it. It cant be that much of a problem.
In order to do that, I have to tear the sump down and it will be down for quite a while as I'll have to pull the chamber wall out and resilicone it, so I'm going to need some more filtration in the meantime, anyway. I could steal the XP3 off the 75, but I just didn't feel like doing that. If I take the socks off, I won't have any mechanical filtration. But, you're right, it wouldn't be that hard.

looking at your sump pics looks to be an easy fix i think you are complicating the things more than it should be. you just need smaller filter socks buy the ones with a handle and lower them down. you dont need the lid deal you have going on to hold them up.

I'm not sure what socks you're referring to. Could you show me?
