Enough filtration?

If my tank has zero ammonia, does that mean my filtration is sufficient since there is enough benefecial bacteria breaking down fish waste to nitrates?

Test all parameters ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. If it's a new setup you most definitely want nitrite level to read zero as well

If ammonia and nitrate are 0, nitrite is low, and you're happy with water clarity, then yes, filtration is adequate.

id say under moderate load. if you pack the tank and overstock it or shock you system you're asking for trouble.

Sorry that I wasnt clear. I'm talking about on an established tank. I'm running a FX5, 3 penguin 350s and 2 #5 sponge filters on 2 connected 125 gallon tanks. I don't overfeed and my ammonia levels are always zero.

My thinking is, if there is no traces of ammonia then I have enough beneficial bacteria with my that setup to support my stock.

There is never enough filtration. Never. However if you readings are fine, and your fish are fine, and this goes on over long periods of time, what are you worrying about?

Once ammonia and all other parameters other than nitrates are 0 then all you need to do is work on keeping your nitrates at low levels. Sounds like you have your filtration setup well. Now you just have to maintain the filtration along with water changes. Good work and happy fish keeping.
