I have a 29g with 6 neons and 2 blue rams. In about a year, I may have to relocate, but can't bring the tank with me (starting fresh when I get there). I have 1.5wpg in my tank, and the substrate is getting changed over to eco-complete in a week. has anyone ever tried making some type of section within the tank with a fine mesh/plexi, and a powerhead or the filter pumping water through it? I want to make my tank as maintenance free as possible.

I was thinking of doing a 6" wide x 12" (tank width) x 3" deep box area, and filling it with java moss or something that will grow fast and suck up Nitrates. Appearance isn't a huge factor, it just needs to work. I was thinking of putting this in the top right corner of the tank, then having the AC110 flow partially onto it. This would hopefully contain it, but do you think it would make much of a dent in nitrates? it's approx 1 gallon worth of live crap that grows like a weed, in addition to whatever is established by then in the rest of the tank.

Minimal stocking/feeding will be key.

I think it can be done, go heavy on filtration though too.

Err, what about essential elements? Wouldn't they run out?

Well done.

Yes they would, but you add EE's when you top off, unless you are using RODI water.

Plants arent very demanding.

There are a lot of people that run large (75-125g) displays with little filtration and no water changes.

Some people on plantedtank.net claim to have run tanks for years without h2o changes.

good amount of plants. and minimum light. i neglected my 20g planted once for 2 months. with very lil feeding. no water changes no heaters. and no lights only from the living room. and after 2 months i turned on the lights. water was super clean and clear i was like wtf?!?

You are unlikely to get away with this, but in a properly set up, densely planted tank with minimal stocking this is very possible.

I don't understand this. are you doing this just to see if it can be done? man, it's only a 29 gal. one 5 gal. bucket give you a 20% wc. if you can't find the time for that then maybe you should look for another hobby. nitrates are'nt the only thing that can foul your water. don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I just don't get it.
