so, the 300gal has been upgraded as far as filtration goes....

now:

3 - fx5's --- all filled with ceramic rings
1 - xp3 --- filled with ceramic
2 - fluval 4+ ---- filled with foam and polishing pads

enough?

also - will this work to drain a tank for water change purposes? hook a hose to the backwash portion of the fx5, close the outlet valve and intake valve, turn off filter, then open just the intake valve? and more importantly, will that be faster than using a python?

i would change 2 of those FX5s and just put polishing pads/foam, i doubt you will need all that surface area just for a 300g, unless you intend to stock it to the max then yea like that is enough.

What do your water tests suggest?

I'm a huge fan of bio and all, but IMO I'd either switch out one of the fx5's for mech. or get something else on there with mech.

it's also help to know what your water tests say, and what it is stocked with...

Unless you are stocking literally fish huge massive fish and are dumping a truckload of food in for them, there is no need for any extra filtration. You may already have 'too much'.

thats a lot of filtration, i'd say fine as i run 2 fx5's all bio filtration apart from the foam that sits on the outside of the baskets and i use 2 fluval 4+ too on my 180 gal.
whats the stocking list.

thanks for the input guys....

the stock list is quite massive...

6 - aros
7 - pbass
1 - pike
1 - vieja
2 - pleco
1 - perch
3 - dats

water tests show all readings good --- but again, whether it is uneaten food, or sudden other source for an ammonia spike, with such a stocklist, i want to be sure that my fish will make it out of almost any water problem....

also still doing 20-30% wc's every other day

That tank is already hella stocked. GL
