Recently I had a fatal incident happen to my 260. I'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions from people knowledgeable in this sort of thing.

I recently acquired 6 redhooks from snookn21 on aquabid. I payed for overnight but apparently they sat in shipping for 2 days. I added them to my tank and they joined up with my other 7 SD and everything seemed fine. My other stock is a large Oscar and a not full grown raph catfish that just hides all the time. Everything seems completely fine so I assumed all was well.

Sunday I did a decent size wc. Monday/Tuesday I noticed some shiny sorta dots on some of the redhooks. I noticed some body stuff when I first got them and their fins were sorta shredded a little but I assumed this was from stress and internal aggression during shipping. Wednesday when I got home 3 of the smaller SD were dead at the top and I noticed the rest were all covered in white dots. It all happened so abruptly. I did a water test and my nitrates were a bit high. (specially since i did a wc so recently)

I went to my LFS and bought something called Kordon ICH attack. I dosed for the entire tank (counting the sump water and 260 for tank I rounded up and did 30 TSP for roughly 300 gallons. I also raised the tank temp to around 84-85. Waited 24 hours, next day the other 10 SD were all dead and my poor Oscar was covered too. I did another wc and dosed again for the full volume after the wc. Today after another 24 hours I came home hoping Iago would look better, and he looked 100x worse. Covered in white dots, laying on the substrate. I'm pretty sure the raph cat has some on him too but frankly I so rarely see him I dunno what he normally looks like. Oddly enough since this has all been happening he's coming out all the time now.

So today I euthanized my boy Iago with clove oil....He appeared to be getting much worse very fast every 24 hours and I just didn't want the poor fella to suffer anymore. I did do ANOTHER wc as well and dosed for the entire tank as well...

That's where I'm at now. So I'm pretty bummed about this whole thing and feel like maybe I should have seen these signs earlier. Or quarantined the fish I had shipped in. He claimed they were all treated for parasites/etc in his ad. I feel like maybe I should have used salt and not this kordon crap that literally did nothing. I dunno, I just feel ****ty because I feel like maybe I could have done something more to prevent this and I'm bummed I lost my boy Iago and his SD buddies. I've kept many tanks and honestly never had anything like this happen or had to deal with any fish illness/parasites/etc.

So where I'm at now is the cat is still alive. Do I continue to do wc and dose? He doesn't appear to be covered like all the rest of the fish were and is swimming around honestly 100x more than he normally did in the past.

If he dies clearly my option from what I've read is after 4 days or so the tank will be clear because ich won't have a host right? But then what's feeding my bb? So will that die off from not having any fish waste and then I'd have to cycle all over?

Or say he doesn't die and continues to seem active and fine? How do I know he's parasite free? And the tanks safe? At this pt. I'm just super bummed and not sure what my next move is or if I even bother to keep dosing with this all natural bullshit that did nothing or keep doing wc's.... So here I am, with a big empty 260g tank, had to bury my Oscar, and I'm not sure what my next step is. 20210127_131229.jpgIMG-20210129-WA0005.jpegIMG-20210129-WA0005.jpeg

So sorry for your loss! wow, those poor fish. Since they all perished in such short order ... I wonder if it might have to do with your water conditioner. A couple thoughts:

1. I once lost two L46 zebra plecos - I attribute that loss to buying my Prime water conditioner from Amazon. Now i only go through Petco or BigAlsOnline. I think I had a counterfeit bottle of Prime.
2. Did your local water change .. did they start adding chloramines to your local water. I learned this the hard way also ... when I started losing fish unexplicably. I called the local water company and they informed me the they had started adding chloramines ... and my dechlorinator didn't treat for chloramines.

It just seems a little fast for a tank to have such an advanced proliferation of ich -- which is why I'm thinking that there might be ich plus another contributor.

It is so sad to see those pics. Sorry and thank you for sharing.

p.s. one more question: When did you set up that tank? Are the filters cycled?

This doesn’t look like ich to me.
Granted there may be some ich on these fish this is more of a fine dusty looking element.
I’m thinking this is Velvet Fish Disease (Oodinium). Either way I’m sorry for your loss things like this can really test a person’s dedication to the hobby.

Thanks man. Like I said, I've kept a lot of tanks in the past and I've never had something like this happen.

1. I've never had that issue with prime from amazon. That being said we can rule this out. Same prime bottle I've been using for over a year on my 55 gallon tank with no issues.

2. I think this can also be ruled out because I have no issues with my 55 gallon tank. However I was under the impression Prime treated for chloramine and any other lethal agent in tap water?....

I also felt like this was so aggressively fast acting... I mean I had my cleaning lady Wednesday morning, but I really don't think that could have had anything to do with it. She just cleans the outside of the wood on the cabinet and canopy and doesn't touch anything else or open anything. To me it's visually clear there was some sort of disease or parasite. Maybe it was something besides ICH. I know the white dots and coverage was aggressively fast. And the fins, just started to like shred or rot away on the ends...

It would be nice to get some insight on what 100% happened, but more importantly I need to figure out my next move.

I just googled Oodinium and that's EXACTLY what it looked like. Now I'm going to do some research on that and find out wtf causes it. Maybe I can get some more insight on wtf happened.

Yes, it does. I've always love Oscar, and SD are like my favorite dither fish for them. I was briefly thinking "so what now after this is all clear and I have a big empty tank," and my first thought was I don't want to keep SD again... and frankly not sure I can do another O. I dunno. Too early to be thinking about that though. Anyhow, on a side note I do have a RCK and a Ornate Bichir in the 55 grow-out.

Sorry for your loss.

It looks to me like the new fish were carrying 'something'. You don't mention any form of quarantine for these new 'infected' fish. It looks pretty obvious what's happened from where i'm sitting.

Moving forward there may be a couple of things you can take from this. Think about quarantining new fish, and i'd look at your water change schedule too. 50% every fortnight is a little wimpy, your nitrate levels are proof of that.

I wish you luck in re-setting up.

Didn’t get the notification. Sorry for the late reply. Its velvet like BIG-G BIG-G said. Don’t want to beat a dead horse but as the others of said about quarantining and good water quality. Hang in there fellow Floridian!

Marine velvet disease, gotta treat with cupramine (copper based) without carbon and lights off for 14-15 days. A lot deadlier and faster acting than ich and mostly confused. Basically if you can count the spots it’s ich and if you can’t it’s velvet. Gotta QT in a small tank, even if it’s with other fish you already have, treating a main display tank is too inefficient. The fish could’ve been “healthy” when first shipped but the stress brings out the disease that may have otherwise stayed dormant.
