So, I had a thought today. The most frequently suggested way to find a breeding pair of fish is to get them when young and get a bunch of them and let them pair naturally. I was talking to the owner of my LFS and he said most local shops/chain pet stores get fish in and typically (if there is a tank with a bunch of the same species) they're from the same fry or at least the same parents. So when you are getting your handful of fish and hopefully a breeding pair, you're getting a bunch of brothers and sisters hoping for them to pair up together resulting in in-breeding. Just food for thought.

alot of the offspring never can learn to read or write.

They are usually terrible at sports requiring hand eye coordination. Also speak with a lisp. But on a serious note, inbreeding is totally fine for fish, at least for a few generations, and even then the main downfall is that they have a terribly weak immune system, due to the lack of new genes. But it's not like you're gonna have fish swimming upside down after a generation of inbreeding. The most expensive koi in the world have been inbred and line bred for the last hundred years or so.
