Recently saw these guys at the Central Park Zoo and did a little research to discover that they seem like they'd work in my swamp setup. They're apparently pretty common in nature and have been bred in captivity, but I never see them for sale. Thinking about actually contacting the zoo and asking if they have a source.

So yeah, anybody have or know where to acquire these really unique snakes? Unless the price is totally bonkers, I can probably afford.

I read a post about a MFK member getting some in 2005. Says he got them from "Jon Rare" although that's an unfamiliar vendor to me.

Thanks! OSA seems like a good vendor, although I haven't dealt with them yet. It'd be great if they could source this, and I'll check it out.
 
Whats up, sounds pretty cool. Call Mike at Rt 4 tell him Jay told you to call him ( so he knows you are not a flaker) if they are available somewhere he will get it. I would give him a price range your comfortable with so you dont get a surprise and or he doesnt get it cause he thinks its to much.

I'd love something like this but I think

a) they'd eat my plants, and

b) something else'd eat them, haha.

Gonna reach out to a few vendors as per suggestions and see what's up.
 
Hey Mount! I would worry about the turtle chewing on the snake. These are great snakes, but need peace and quiet. OSA is near me - so if you prefer not to have him ship, I'm happy to go pick it / them up for you and arrange something with you. (He is a good vendor, at any rate.)

To answer your questions more directly; keep an eye on Kingsnake's classifieds. They do turn up from time to time, and are actually very reasonably priced. The White Plains Reptile Show is in November, and there may be some - you can check the vendor list for the show, and contact them, and see if they can't bring you some there.

Adults are usually about $80, with CB babies being about $150.

Thanks for the price ranging! Yeah, I figure a nip is a possibility. I've seen him nip things out of boredom but when he discovers they're not an easy meal (he is an extremely lazy eater--ONLY eats from my hand or tongs) he tends to leave stuff alone.

One of the nice things about these snakes is that the reports I read list people keeping them in 30g tanks, and the setup at the zoo wasn't even very large footprint-wise for a group of several. So I figure I could get them, keep an eye on interaction for a week or so, and if I see any aggression issues just move them out. I imagine it wouldn't take more than an hour or so for me to get a tank up and running for them with just the stuff I've got lying around my apartment.

I checked Kingsnake initially and will keep an eye on it.

Are you thinking about going to the reptile show yourself?
 
I actually am thinking about going to the show - I want to set up a Day Gecko terrarium for the nature classroom, and have not been lucky in finding what I want - so I figured I might try there - but not sure yet.
Yes, those snakes do great in smaller tanks - 20 - 30 gallons, so you're safe there.
