Hey all I recently got a Flowerhorn about 7", i'm not trying to power feed and I feed my fish once a day, I was wondering how much I should be feeding this guy? His staple is gonna be Hikari Bio-Gold+ with some other pellets/frozen foods mixed in. Any input as to how many pellets/daily at this size would be best for optimum health? Can also feed twice a day with less per meal if it's necessary. Thanks.

awesome, thanks.

One other question, I just read the sticky for basic FH info and saw that they shouldnt be on black gravel or backgrounds, why is this? I had just put up a black background today and just took it down as soon as I read this but also have black gravel so i'll be purchasing a different color of that tomorrow as well. any input would be appreciated

It all depends on the type of FH you have and the color.....some will do great with black background. The key is color and surrounding....most people will have blue background to make colors stand out more in their FH. (ie..like red dragons, blue background makes the red stand out)

But some people I know who have fader fish or BP or KKP, use Black backgrounds and substrate.

Okay yeah my guy is mostly electric blue with some red so i'm gonna flip it for the blue side... think if i mix in a bag of natural colored gravel in with the black it will be good enough to not freak him out? Also is it actually bad for the fish or does it just change their coloration?

OMG, that's not a flowerhorn. It's awesome! I was expecting a turd head, not a beautiful fish! Very nice! Black background would be awesome for that coloration.

i just had the black background up and took it down because of a post about how it was a bad idea... any idea if thats just for the colors or if it's actually detrimental to their health? that's what I need to know

thank you for the compliment though :headbang2

It's not detrimental unless they attack the glass all day due to their reflection. I cannot imagine a real reason to avoid black background and substrate aside from that.

I keep all of my FH in black backgrounds, just as I have with every CA cichlid that I have ever owned. The info about black backgrounds in that sticky is total BS. Your pearly male will look fantastic against a solid black background, and should be fine with your substrate as well.

Awesome, thanks. I had it up for about 5 hours and his colors were looking great and then I read that sticky and flipped out thinking i'd done something horribly wrong haha.. looks like it will be going back on tomorrow. WOO
