I recently decided to give convict cichlids a try...I set up a 58 gal, cycled it with my feeders out of my 10, and *finally* got to go pick out a pair. the tank has plenty of hiding places and fake plants, and the convicts seemed to be house shopping as soon as they were introduced. they picked out a cave they liked and moved right in, so I left them to settle for the night. this morning I got up and only he was in there. in all I have read, I haven't read about a male eating a female ENTIRELY gone. There wasn't even a bit of her in the tank! I was pretty down and trying to decide what to do--go get a new female or scrap the idea because he was too mean. so I decided to clean and think about it. wouldn't you know it....I found her! about thirty feet away. somehow she had managed to flip out of the tiny gap between the back splash and filter, flipped off the aquarium and through the dining room and almost to the end of the living room, where she expired. I felt so awful imagining her struggle
now I have to find a new way to close the tank up even more. any suggestions? I had thought about maybe a mesh fabric over the whole aquarium under the hood so the filter could run through it but I'm concerned about the heater.
I have to say it would have been hilarious that my convict escaped if it hadn't ended with her death....
