I have wondered for a while if my fish is an Escondido carpintis or a regular. It is about 7-8 inches TL. Here he is, this is the best shot I could get. He is very camera shy.

Looks like my escondido so Ima say yes......

Cool, I'm glad it's not a regular carpintis. How much would one expect to pay for an Escondido this big? I bought it for $30 at six inches.

You need a good shot from the side to really tell. It's not like you'd see 'escondido' at a bulk LFS, unless it's something that has been brought to the store.

If it came from A Place For Pets it's an Escondido. The Escondido variant has wormy markings along the face compared to the spotted gill plate of normal carpintis.

I have a 6" female Escondido from them.

Actually it's more the odd shaped spots/blotches on the body that is the major difference. They almost look like a jigsaw puzzle.

Here's a couple photos of my pair. Unfortunately the male killed the female back in may/june 2007 :(
