I purchased two Escondidos from Rapps there about 2 to 2.5 inches, curious to know is it to early to determine the sex yet? Also is there any other members that are housing Escondidos or Texas cichlids??
Escondido's can be a little harder as many of the females will not show a black spot in the middle of there dorsal fin like other caprintis do. Generally you can tell very easy by body shape at 3-4". Sometimes subdominate males can be harder to tell.
Agree with jgentry, although males generally have a more steep profile, sub dom males can mimic females.
And in some carpintus like mine from location chairel, the dorsal color in females is sometimes subdued.
Below note the large male, at only 1.5" and his steeper profile
below a female, note the profile, and the subdued dark area in the dorsal
below a mature male
when spawning colors change dramatically
In your pic, the carpintus mid top appears to me to be female, as I think I see a dark area in the dorsal. Could be an illusion, so a closer shot would help.
Vontehillo is not the same location variant as Escondido, although are both carpintus.
