These guys look so similar its difficult to tell save doing a vent check.

The only real outward thing you can look at is the slope of the forehead. Males have a steep slope whereas females have more of a 45° angle slope.

Here is a male, a bit bigger than yours

One a bit smaller/younger 20190111_160621.jpg
You can see the forehead just starting to push out.

Here is a female

And a younger one

I am leaning female on yours ATM, give it some time tho, they really don't start looking different till about 3.5in mark or so.

Another way to tell females apart in many Centrals is females will have a dark/black spot in the dorsal fin. This is true of these fish as well, but I find it rather hard to find when they show a more black base color. So I go off of the forehead shape and how it's behavior is.
You can see it clearly here on this female Nanolutae 20200731_175926.jpg

ur right its so hard to tell with my escondido bc she is so dark natured lol

Above a mature male, note the frontal profile, pointed fin tips, and lack of obvious black color in the dorsal.
Below a female, 1st shots young (not quite mature), note the less steep profile, and black showing in the dorsal
.

Now a mature female, note the more obvious black

But even as 1" inch juvies the male steep profile is obvious when compared together.
