The only real outward thing you can look at is the slope of the forehead. Males have a steep slope whereas females have more of a 45° angle slope.

I am leaning female on yours ATM, give it some time tho, they really don't start looking different till about 3.5in mark or so.

ur right its so hard to tell with my escondido bc she is so dark natured lolAnother way to tell females apart in many Centrals is females will have a dark/black spot in the dorsal fin. This is true of these fish as well, but I find it rather hard to find when they show a more black base color. So I go off of the forehead shape and how it's behavior is.
