I have a 6-7 inch male red devil/midas alone in a 55gallon. I recently got a 8-9 inch jack dempsey (unsure of sex) from a roomate that moved out. The red devil has grown by himself for many months now and is not used to sharing. I tried putting in the dempsey because he is larger than the devil. I thought the dempsey would be able to hold his own due to the size advantage. I was really really wrong. I had to throw the dempsey into a crappy 20 gallon so it can heal. So my question to you guys is, should I try co-habing these two beasts or should I just give up and get rid of one. I was thinking of taking out the giant pirate ship that is currently in the tank and adding all new decorations. Also, possibly adding another fish and trying a controlled overcrowding (although it could go bad). I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:nilly:

in a 55 gallon its not going to happen, i hade the exact same setup about 8 months ago. and didnt work no matter what i did.

but try changing the decor around and take both fish out then place back in a nd see if it works, or take the devil out and place the dempsy in for a coupl days and then place the devil back in.

there is still no garuntee it will work out.
:(

agreed

you cant take out a red devil for a couple of days and then put the dempsey in. when you put the red devil back in. after a day or two he will establish the area and it will be back to normal.

Get another tank for the JD. Save yourself a lot of time and heartache. Most of all save your JD a lot of pain.

Took the words right out of my mouth. That Devil will probally never allow another Cichlid with him in a tank that small.

Well I have a Devil and a Dempsey in a tank togeather but then again there are some differences. Mine are in a 125G, and they grew up togeather so they are used to one another. Dempsey just stays out of the devils way and they never fight.

I had one in a 100 gallon with 4 oscars 4 pacu all over 18 inch a piece n a 5 inch red devil within 2 weeks that devil was bossing them around their the most aggressive fish in freshwater the only chiclid that comes close to them is managuensis and to go along with what sym said I had a baby for a year n he grew up with a jd one day he got sick of the jd n just ripped him up best case scenario is get rid of the devil
