I need some help. I got 3 bags of Black Estes PermaColor Ceramic "S" Grade Quartz for my new 125g tank. They said to wash it so I put 1/4 of a bag in a tub in my utility room's sink and truned the water on high. When I started I could not even see the sand even though it was only 6" of water. I swished and stirred with the water running until I could clearly see the sand I was cleaning.

Next into my tank! It looked great until I added water. It looks like tinted windows in a car! AAAhhh! No probelm, I fired up the Magnium 350 with that big white filter and waited to see the pretty sand. 8 Hours later, no change..... Okay I fired up the Rena XP4. I did not want to screw up my bio media (Matrix & Purigen) so I used two of the Zio packs it came with and filled the other trays with activated filter carbon.

Ran over night, No visable change. The white Mangum 350 filter is still pretty white.

Okay, now the killer. when I got a sample of the sand several months ago I tested it to see if it dropped to the floor of the tank as the sand is very fine. The glass jar did the same thing so I knew I needed to clean the sand. BUT I looked at the jar with the original sand test & water and it looks the same way today. It never settled.

Please HELP!

My experience with ANY black sand is it's extremely dirty and takes a few weeks to settle. Just keep doing big water changes and it should clear up. I don't know about estes as I've never used it...

A diatom filter will clear it up, guaranteed!

Maybe a cheaper solution than a Diatom! I checked and I ran the sand test at Christmas so in almost 4 months it has not settled. I wonder if it will re-occur every time I clean.

What about Seachem Clarity?
