For thos who use estes sand.. i just got off the phone with the company who makes it and it DOES contain silica!!! :irked:

they do not offer a FW sand only marine sand but says not to buffer the water,. but still contains silica

guess im heading to Lowes to get some playsand that is 100% silica free :D and $3 for 50 pounds

Have fun with a weeks worth of washing sand!!!!!

J/K bro, but that stuff comes out of the bag nasty!!!

Just watch that your rays don't kick sand into your filters. The sand will either clog the impeller housing or damage the motor shaft if applicable. I ruined a couple of filters before I decided to go bare bottom and more recently smooth gravel/river stones.

I have been useing sand in my tanks for many years, my tank is reef ready HA! no worries about sand in the pump :D

as for quickcrete playsand im not worried about it, i have also been cleaning and prewashing sand for years. it doesnt enter my tank intell it is clear in the bucket.

tony gota take that exta step before just ploping it in your tank  everyone knows that silly man! :headbang2

my tank is practicly bb allready one more vac and there wont even be sand in the tank.

hmm maybe some gravel to be different. i have this week to decide what i want to do

I use the cheap sand from Home Depot, and am very pleased with the results. Never had a problem with it damaging the filters, and my tank is not drilled. The only problem with sand is that you always see fish poo floating on top of it, and if you are not carefule you can scratch the glass with your cleaning magnets.

Washing the sand was easy. First I dumped 2 entire 50 lb bags into the empty tank. Afterwards, I used 2 hoses to clean it. One hose was attached to a power nozzle that was turned on full blast, which I forced into the sand in circular motions repeatedly to make all of the sediment and impurities float. I used another hose that was attached to a cheap utility pump to remove the dirt and sediments etc. After about 15 minutes the sand was clean and the water was clear. Hope this helps...
