Here are a few pictures of the canarensis with their latest spawn which took place three days ago. I pulled out the rock last night and expect the eggs to hatch in a day or so.

Wow, in these pics you can really see how closely they are related to some reef fish. Thanks for sharing :)

Your welcome. Yes, the Madagascan Paretroplus and the Indian Etroplus are closely related to one another and have remained unchanged for many millions of years. Connected to salt water fish ... conceivably. Both E. suratensis and E. maculatus can tolerate pure sea water for periods of time and do well in brackish water (SG ~1.005 to 1.010). Not the canarensis though. They are strictly fresh water.

Brilliant work. Amazingly healthy looking fish- goes to say that you're looking after them well..

Cheers,

Karthik

I find my maculatus make excellent parents. Why did you remove the rock/eggs? Are there hungry tank mates?

I have bred E. maculatus many times and you're right, they do make great parents. Eventually the fry get snapped up though. Any time I've left the eggs with the canarensis, they have been eaten. The parents are very nervous and at some point, I think the pressure is too much for them. The non-breeding canarensis (8) and a couple of small T. wesseli eventually predate on the eggs and/or fry if the parents don't get to them first. In a practical sense, since the canarensis is a rare fish, I have removed the eggs to help guarantee that I get some young.
