I'm not entirely sure what section Indian cichlids fit into but since this is the most viewed cichlid sub forum I will post it here. A week ago I rescued a lone canary Chromide from a local fish shop. I would love to have a group of these fish like you are supposed to but alas, this lone adult is all they had, a trade in apparently. It's in a 40 gallon breeder with a few small swordtails and a few rainbowfish that didn't get eaten in another tank. Anyway it's about 4 inches long. It has been a week and I can't get this fish to eat anything. They are supposed to like plants but it won't touch any of the live plants I have thrown in there. I have tried three different kinds of spirulina and veggie flake, pellets and regular cichlid flakes and pellets. Also nori sheets, emerald entree frozen food. Blanched spinach and kale too. Does anyone have any ideas for me. I am hesitant to try bloodworms because they are supposed to be grazers and not all grazers can have bloodworms and such. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciatedImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1413151897.125907.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1413151913.162144.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1413151936.877577.jpg

shrimp sautéed in garlic & stuffed with rolled spinach ;-) might work.

This is Etroplus canarensis from the coastal Canara (Kanara) region in India, it stays fairly small.
Mine are fed HBH soft krill and super spirulina pellets, they also like mosquito larvae, gammarus and any other small crustaceans.
I received my group from MFK/ACA member Jose Gonzales, via Dave's Rare Fish in Texas.

The best place to post is probably the West Africa/Madagascar section, as Etroplus is closely related to the Paretroplus dambas of madagascar.

I would try a light feeding of bloodworms. I feed mine bloodworms from time to time as a treat, with no ill effects. They really like guppy grass (Najas guadalupensis) and blanched "squeezed" peas. Mine used to go crazy for kale when younger, but not so much now. Here's a video of mine attacking kale last March, when they were about 8 months old.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I will give them a try. That is a nice looking group of chromides, do they breed for you? Those are beautiful dambas too, I have a small group of menarambo babies I'm growing out

hope you know, my other post was just kidding.
BUT nls makes a 1mm sinking pellet called ALGAEMAX, and my smaller fish like it pretty good.

Nice I didn't know they had that product. She doesn't like the Thera a garlic 1mm NLS which surprised me cause most fish love it. I will find out where I can get the algaemax pellets. And yes I knew you were kidding, although I imagine there is somebody out there stupid enough to try it

I've bred the canarensis quite a few times but I'm finding that the fry aren't the easiest to raise. Mind you, I've only tried to raise one batch, the very first spawn, so I'll change a few things up next time.

I was finally able to get my lone chromite some friends. I now have 8 in a 75. Cost me $175 dollars for all 8. I'm pretty sure that's the most money I have ever spent on a single species of fish. I really hope to be one of the few people who breed these, it will be a while though. Here is my little school in there 75 gallon aquarium. And yes I know it's planted, if they start eating everything I will move the plants.
