What is everyones opinion on this? The ACA says Eureka Reds are hybrids, I wasn't aware of this. I thought they were a line bred species. Technically line breeding is a form of hybridizing but what could a Eureka Red be a mixture of?

I was just informed I can't take my Albino Eureka Red male to the ACA Convention to enter in the show because it is a hybrid.

I dont think Eureka Reds are Hybrids, maybe albino ERs...

If the albino varient was a hybrid the standard would be as well. Same fish just one has the albino gene. I have posted on the ACA forum to see why the experts made this decision. No replies yet though.

Well, I consider myself an expert, just dont know a heck alot about this question.. lol.. Sorry..

Im not big on hybrids unless you keep them for home aquariums only.

OK, I don't know much, but from reading, I read that they aren't hybrids, just line bred to get that much red. And also have several different names that all equate to the same fish...sound about right?

Sounds about right and that was my opinion as well. The ACA is considering banning line bred fish as well as hybrids because line breeding in a way is hybridization. You take a fish and make it look nothing like it's wild line. Who knows. I will post what the opinions are from the people at the ACA when I get them.

I though Eureka reds are fine... It is the german reds that while most people concider a line breed, the ACA considers it a hybrid. (I think if there would have been documentation on how they were breed and it was proved they were just a line breed it would be ok.)

Also I think Albino Eureka reds are fine too. (I saw two in the ACA for 2008.)

I'm not sure how line breeding is a form of hybridization. Isn't line breeding species specific?

OK, this may be a rant, but didn't all the Yellow labs in the hobby for a long time come from one wild caught pair??

I am working with Vics, which are rare. Sometimes the only thing that can be done is to line breed...no other possible mates. I'd like to diversify my bloodlines, but in some cases that may not be possible. When discussing this with people a lot more experienced than I, I was told that it wasn't that big of a deal, and that a lot of the endangered species came from one wild caught pair. The Kyoga Flamebacks were the example given to me, as a fish that every one in the US are related.

I'd like to know how the ACA Cares program plans to deal with this issue.

Yes, line breeding is species specific but there are members of the ACA that are pushing to have them banned from shows as well. Take this for an example - you can't find a Eureka Red in the wild. There fore a line bred fish is altered, hence their opinion of it being a type of hybrid.

Ikevi - there were Albino Eureka Reds at past ACA Conventions that were entered in the shows. The 2009 convention will be my first and I was looking forward to entering my AER in the contest but I was told tonight by one of the event chairs for the 09 convention that Eureka Reds are now considered hybrids and will not be allowed.
