Anyone around here ever use euro bracing for their plywood tank instead of exterior framing?

Because of space constraints, I am considering screwing and gluing 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood and using the now 1 1/2" plywood to construct my very own baby monster tank. It will have a footprint of 84" x 48", and be about 33" deep. The euro brace would be 1 1/2" x 6" plywood. It would be screwed and glued to the inside top perimeter of the tank. The euro brace is on the same plane as the bottom of the tank.

Thanks for looking,

Joe

I wouldn't think that by euro bracing it you'd be able to not build a frame around it. The frame adds strength to the joints and rigidity to the plywood, as ply will warp like hell if you let it.

Use waterproof glue and pre-stress the plywood (inward) and you may just have a winner here.

Do you mean something like this

These are from the construction of my 80 gallon test tank.
Granted that it is only 4' long, but there is 0mm bowing in the middel of the tank when filled(water level round about 23").

Dr. Joe, If not for the glass, I might have gone for the pre-stress. Very cool idea. I am going to pre-stress the cover for this tank. I plan on using that double wall polycarbonate used in greehouses. It is even supposed to resist condensation. We'll see.

maxumis, That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing. Zero bow, that's outstanding! Are your braces a single thickness of 3/4" plywood? How wide are they? Is your tank 3/4" plywood? How much bulge do you get at the middle of the back wall?

Pre-stressing works with the glass, You just pre-stress the front then route the the edge for the glass so it's square.
