Euthanizing fish...

freezing them actually causes them quite a bit of pain i've heard, as there blood begins to freeze in their veins. i add a bit of vodka to some water, wait a bit and add alittle more, and they drift into a drunken death.

There are lots of ways to euthanize fish (and lots of threads on how to do it). Since you already bought clove oil, may as well use that. Remember to mix it thoroughly with the water, to make sure it mixes properly. I think cutting off the head isn't the best way, as I'm sure you'd have to destroy the brain to make sure it's dead and not suffering (you do with most animals). I.E. wrap the fish in a towel or bag and hit the head on a hard surface, or alternatively use a hammer. Quick way to go, but can be distressing if your emotionally attached to your fish, which I'm sure, many of us are.

Other ways I've heard of include alcohol and carbonated drinks or baking soda and water mix (although this would be suffocating the fish). To be honest, I'd use the clove oil, or destroy the brain (or get someone else to do it for you).

i usually give a very hard hit to the head - if it's suffering then I'd rather end it quickly than let the poor fish be in pain for too long. It guts me to see a fish in pain

A bit along your line, Davo, if the fish are small, some guys just put them in the palm of their hands and then violently and quickly slap them against the floor...it is immediate death..

but with our big monsters and our attachment to them it is nigh impossible to do...

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure I want to decapitate it, not sure i could do that very happily.

Clove oil is, the oil from cloves. heh. AKA eugenal. Used to numb teeth during toothaches before a dentist can be contacted.

id go with decapatation. It kills the fish immediately and the fish will feel no pain. Just make sure the knife is sharp enough 2 do it in 1 blow. Its always hard when u cant do any more.
