I have always thought I heard mine make a low pitch sort of moan when I do water changes or have my hands in the tank. I thought it was pretty funny. It was like they were complaining. Pretty faint and have only thought I've heard it a few times. Who knows.
The polys are two E. Congicus 12-14", three Endys 13-16+", one Ornate 16+", and one Lapradie 15+". Only other fish are two 12" dats and a 19-20" Jardini Aro.
What two sounds are they supposed to make? They probably translate into "Give me food" and, "I prefer not to move".
The ichtyological note stated that they "groan" or "moan" while swimming away rapidly escaping "danger" ie. your hand. Mine have only "moaned" when i'm trying to catch them.
P.senegalus and P.retropinnis were studied and found to make two distinct sounds.A thumping noise and a moan.
The mechanics are unclear at this time.
Thumps: Occured during close encounters by conspecifics one or both would raise their dorsal fins and emit thumps the sound energy was strongest between 100-200z with a maximum rate of 3 thumps per second and decreasing as one conspecific moved away from the other.
Moans could be heard even without technical equipment. As conspecifics swam rapidly away from eachother or were startled.
Also reported to makes the same sounds(but not studied) are P. endlicheri, P.palmas polli, and P. ornatipinnis
(Abstract in Icthyological notes: Copeia 1988 (4) pp. 1076-1077).
just the occassional "thump" and "swish" for me, i hope someone can put in an underwater recorder, may it be low or high frequency ( same one they use for whales and dolphins) so we could clearly hear the sound bichirs make and when they make it.
