I was thinking about adding some of that freshwater bamboo you always see at fish stores to my 55g... Now I've been hearing that that it's a fully submersable plant from some people and that the top of it needs to be out of the water from other people... I was wondering if anyone could clear this up for me and anything else that would be beneficial to know about keeping bamboo in a freshwater 55g tank, like how much lighting, what type of gravel, do I need a CO2 bubbler,...etc.

You can not grow them fully under water.

Just place the bottom few inches in the water with everything green above the water line.

For light if your tank is close to a window then that will do. if not a hanging pendant type of light is best. Or a diy alternative such as a clip on fixture made for automotive mechanics that excepts a screw in light bulb. Take that and hang it a foot or so above the plant and run a day light 26 watt spiral compact flourescent 6500K bulb.

No co2 or fertilizer is needed. Thats why you use bamboo to eat up excess nutrients in the tank.

Alot of people who have HOB style filters stick the bamboo peices in the back of the filter and put a light over them.

Bamboo is the only thing thriving in my sump. I usually have them about 3 inches above the water line. Theyre so easy to keep. Low maintenance and need minimum lighting. I have a bunch of them and it looks like an underwater forrest :)
