Hi all :)
I'm hoping for some tips on how to diagnose why one of my Discus seems to be producing excessive slime. The fish is eating and pooping normal, but sometimes is antisocial, especially when slime is heavy. The fish is in a 60 gallon with 8 other tankmates that are doing great. I've read slime often clears just by upping the amount of water being changed, which I have been doing, and it does seem to get better, but the slime never completely leaves and comes back strong till the next wc, and now I think it's taking a toll on the fish. I was going to try a salt bath, this morning, but I'm out of salt. So I'll do that this evening. If that doesn't clear it up, I'm going to want to medicate. Any thoughts on medication? How do I determine if I have a bacterial or fungal infection? Thanks a bunch guys :)

Are you using aged water? I would check if there is a PH swing in your tank vs tap. I would like to rule out micro bubbles since your in Cali and were in spring/summer you never know  it can be bacterial but hard to say with out pics. also, how old are they did they try spawning lately? during spawn the parents will produce more slime.

Hey whale! :)
It could very well be the ph swing. Only in the last few weeks have I stopped aging my water. I'm doing everything with a bucket and hose, including dragging the aged water from the bin in the garage to the tank in house. So I started getting lazy :/
Iirc, my tap changed from around 7.5 to 7.3 overnight. Thanks, I'm gonna go fill my aging bin. I feel like I've been playing it kinda risky doing my water changes checking the temp by hand and dumping the water right in anyway :)

I don't think it has to do with your PH .2 ppm is not much of a swing to affect them. If it was 2ppm then i could see but not in your scenario! Any new tank mates, decor change, filter changes etc..?

Hmm.. No. BB 60, no decor, ac110, and a sponge filter. I just did the salt bath, Im going to do 1 with every wc and age my water again in the meantime. I don't like to medicate until it's the last resort. I have
a spare tank, should I qt him?

what size are they Juvies or adults? If your going to do the salt dip i would set up the QT tank and use 2-3 TBS of salt to 1 gallon of water and dip for appx. 10 min or till fish rolls over then put back into QT tank immediately make sure tank is aerated well. If your gonna do a salt bath then just keep it in the main tank and after water change you can add up to 1 tbs of salt per gallon and if you want just fill tank half way less water and salt and you cane do more water changes :)

Sorry whale, I should've mentioned the are juvies around 3.5-4" I'll try to post pictures.

I don't think I'm getting anywhere with these salt dips, although I have yet to dose till the fish rolls over, I've never donethat, so I'm a little apprehensive about that. The fish has lost a lot of weight so I'm going to qt him tonight.
